EMV® technology is the global standard for credit cards that make use of a chip to authenticate transactions. These EMV computer chips encrypt sensitive financial information from the card making transactions much more secure than the traditional magnetic-stripe credit cards. EMV has been created and developed by many credit card providers such as American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Visa primarily for the purpose of preventing credit card fraud.
In the past, credit card issuers were the ones who took responsibility for fraudulent credit card transactions. However, that liability now lies with whichever party in the transaction is found to be the least compliant with EMV technology. At present, merchants with a branded forecourt are able to pass the liability for fraudulent charges back to the brand - for example, Exxon or CitGo. However, there are some new regulations coming down the pipeline in April 2021 in regards to EMV compliance and liability will now lie with the individual gas station or convenience store location. By April 1, 2021, every gas pump should be equipped with an EMV chip card reader. This can be daunting for a business owner, especially with the initial cash outlay.
